Questions of the Week

Dear Steve,
My girlfriend goes to school at Lipscomb University in Nashville, TN. I am about to move back to Alabama. I already have the ring. There are swings all over the campus and when someone asks a girl to marry them on that campus, they do it in the swings. They are called the marriage swings. Now people sit in these all the time just to sit. I go to visit her often. I want to propose to her on one of those swings but I don't want it to look to obvious before I do it. I don't know what to do before or after either. Any help?
- Britt B.

Steve's answer:
Hey Britt! First, congratulations for being way ahead of the game in thinking and planning about making this proposal special for her. Take a deep breath knowing you are going to make this a great moment. Here is an option to consider. Plan a late dinner and movie and afterwards tell her you want to take a late night walk; you have some things on your mind you need to share with her. Have someone get to the swings before you do to set up the scene (hopefully u can do this really late where there will be few if any people around, and get some help from a friend). Buy small candles to surround the swings and any other elements that will help enhance the romance and ambience. Try soft music such as a guitar player in background or even the right stuff on an iPod. As you walk together she will see the swing and candles and begin to get the picture. From there make sure you say the words that you feel. Just remember to take your time and all will be well. If she has close friends or family there you can see them afterwards for a bonfire announcement and champagne toast. Hope this helps…again congratulations on being in love!

Dear Steve,
I am in need of some creativity and advice. In 24 hours my girlfriend of 3 years and I will fly to Jamaica for a 7 day vacation with an ocean view. I was fully prepared to make the most romantic of proposals with a dinner for two in the sand on the beach during sunset. The ring had to be special ordered and just my luck it will not be ready in time for my trip!!! I am extremely disappointed and I am trying to turn a negative situation into a positive. Is there any way I can be both romantic and creative and propose without the ring while in Jamaica? The ring should be here for me within a week of returning from our trip. Any advice would be more than greatly appreciated!
- Brandon S.

Steve's answer:
Brandon, YOUCH, tough spot but you have the exact right attitude. If possible go to your jeweler, get the center diamond only and put it into a tiny cache or box. Make it a special presentation letting her know the perfect design just for her is on the way. Or you could get a cigar band, Cracker Jack box with a play ring, or just a play ring from a toy store. Tell her you love her and have designed a very special ring for her which is still being created but in the meantime... "I hope you will wear this with all my love... because no matter the ring my love and commitment are yours." At this point it's what you say that will really count...the ring once it arrives will be the icing on the cake!
